Proposal for -/- Macromolecule X-Ray Crystallography Laboratory Management

Aim:

To make good use of the two ports of X-ray beam for macromolecule crystallography experiments among research groups.

Parties:

1.        Dr L Lab

2.        Dr D Lab

3.        Dr G Lab

4.        Other Internal/External Labs/Users

Common Facilities:

One X ray generator

Two Beam Ports / Two Cryo-systems

Microscope/Working Bench/Incubators etc..

Guidelines:

1.        Beam time allocation

l         Under normal working condition

One week per party (1, 2, 3, and 4*) per month per beam port.

* Including the flexible buffer time (for General Maintenance/Repairing, For Teaching/Demo, For Urgent/Important data collections, for other internal/external users etc..)

l         Under Machine-Down Conditions

The loss of beam time will be equally# shared by the parties.

# In case when it is Evident that the damage is due to carelessness/misusage/improper handling (human-related factors), the involved party shall be responsible for the Repairing / Cost / Loss of the beam time.

l         The Beam time allocation is strictly regulated on a monthly base. No beam time transfer over month period is allowed unless it is a two-party agreement between any 1, 2 and 3.

2.        X-Men

l         Each of the parties 1, 2, and 3 shall assign a fixed X-man for their beam time as well as for the 4 party’s beam time (rotating duty for the parson-in-charge from parties 1, 2, and 3) (see Table 1)

l         The duty includes: General machine maintenance, Crystal test/Data collection assistance, Laboratory maintenance/cleaning, Repairing, Reception of external users, Smooth hand-over, Hard disc Clearance / Data transfer and backup, Improvement of the laboratory management to provide better service, etc..

l         Requirements: Actively contactable/approachable - 16 hrs per day - 7 days per week, proper record of the machine usage including problems, Basic Knowledge about the Machines (Training will be provided by Dr L) etc..

l         Regulation: X-men shall Report Directly to Dr L. Together, they form the Management team of -/-Macromolecule X-Ray Crystallography Laboratory.

3.        Future work

l         Selection and Training of X-men.

l         Finish the draft Regulation Guidelines, Improve it, and eventually Make it commonly available for everybody (eg. Webpage for -/- Macromolecule X-Ray Crystallography Laboratory, Good Advertisement too.)

l         Laboratory management strictly follows the Guidelines.

l         Maintenance and upgrade program of the system.

4.        The above guidelines are to be interpreted by the Management team of -/- Macromolecule X-Ray Crystallography Laboratory, i.e. X-men headed by Dr L.
